The Idaho IceWorld Skating School runs in 6 - 8 week sessions. Skaters work to complete a set of objectives for each skill level. Classes meet once a week for 30 minutes. Next session begins the week of May 1, 2017.

(All participants are required to have a Learn to Skate USA membership - details below.)

Registration

  1. Go to www.learntoskateusa.com and purchase or renew your membership for $12.00 + $1.25 or visit the Idaho IceWorld information desk to have your membership processed for $20. You must have a Learn to Skate USA membership to participate in the Learn to Skate sessions at Idaho IceWorld.
  2. Sign up for your Learn to Skate session online, by calling 208-608-7716 or by visiting the Idaho IceWorld information desk.

Learn to Skate USA Class Schedule - May 2 - June 29, 2017

Registration for current session is now closed.  Registration opens April 17 for Boise residents and April 19 for Non-residents for the next session that begins in May and takes place through June.

No classes May 22-27 & June 15.

Spuds and Tater Tots (Parent & Me) - Designed for children ages 2-3 years who have never had formal instruction. Basic skating skills will be taught to the children while requiring parents to participate with the kids.

Wee Ones – Designed children ages 2-3 years old who want to learn how FUN being on the ice can be!  Focus will be on safety both on and off the ice and how to stand and fall correctly while playing games and learning the fundamentals of skating.  No parental participation on ice required.

Snowplow Sam 1 - Designed to teach basic skills to children ages 4-6 years who have never had instruction in a fun, safe and nurturing environment.

Snowplow Sam 2 - For children ages 4-6 who have completed Snowplow Sam 1. Child should be able to glide across the ice and will begin to learn the proper method of pushing and gliding across ice, swizzles, back wiggles and snowplow stop motion.

Snowplow Sam 3 - For children ages 4-6 who have completed Snowplow Sam 2. Child should be able to march and glide, dip, wiggle backwards, do two-foot swizzles and snowplow stop motion.

Snowplow Sam 4 - For children ages 4-6 who have completed Snowplow Sam 3, but aren't ready for joining the older skaters in the Basics. Skaters will add the Rocking Horse, two foot turns and two foot hops in place to their skills.

Basic 1 - For ages 7 & up. Sit on ice and stand up. March forward across the ice. Forward two-foot glide. Dip. Forward swizzles. Backward wiggles. Beginning snowplow stop. Two-foot hop in place.

Basic 2 - For ages 7 & up. Prerequisite master of Basic 1 or Snowplow Sam 3 or 4 elements. Scooter pushes. Forward one-foot glide; R&L. Backward two-foot glide. Rocking Horse. Backwards swizzles. Two-foot turn from forward to backward in place. Moving snowplow stop. Curves.

Basic 3 - For ages 7 & up. Prerequisite mastery of Basic 2 elements. Forward stroking showing correct use of blade. Forward half swizzle pumps on a circle, both directions. Moving forward to backward two-foot turn, both directions. Backward one-foot glides, R&L. Backward snowplow stop, R&L. Forward slalom. Forward pivots, both directions.

Basic 4 - For ages 7 & up. Prerequisite master of Basic 3 elements. Forward outside edge on a circle, R&L. Forward inside edge on a circle, R&L. Forward crossovers, both directions. Backward half swizzle pumps on a circle, both directions. Backward one foot glide, R&L. Beginning two-foot spin. Forward lunges, both legs.

Basic 5 - For ages 7 & up. Prerequisite master of Basic 4 elements. Backward outside edge on a circle, R&L. Backward inside edge on a circle, R&L. Backward crossovers, both directions. Forward outside three-turn, R&L. Advanced two-foot spin. Hockey stop, both directions. Side toe hop.

Basic 6 - For ages 7 & up. Prerequisite mastery of Basic 5 elements. Forward inside three-turn, R&L. Moving backward to forward two-foot turn on a circle, both directions. Backward stroking. Beginning one-foot spin. T-stop, R&L. Bunny hop. Forward spiral on a straight line, R&L. Shoot the duck, R&L.

Pre-Free Skate (formerly Basic 7 & 8) - For ages 7 & up. Prerequisite master of Basic 6 elements. Forward inside open Mohawk from a stand still position, R to L & L to R. Backward outside edge to forward outside edge transition on a circle, both directions. Backward crossovers to a backward outside edge glide (landing position), both directions. Two forward crossovers into a forward inside Mohawk, step down and cross behind, step into one backward crossover and step to a forward inside edge, both directions. One-foot upright spin. Mazurka, R&L. Waltz jump. Backward inside pivots, both directions.

Free Skate 1 - 6 - Designed to introduce the skater to the next level of figure skating. Class will concentrate on beginning jumps; spin techniques; and moves in the field tests. Skater must have passed Pre-Free Skate.

Teen - Designed for teenagers 13 - 18 yrs. Classes will follow the Learn to Skate USA Adult curriculum, which is more progressive than the Basic 1 - 6 and Pre-Free Skate curriculum.

Adult 1- 6 - Designed for adults ages 18 & up. Class will follow the Learn to Skate USA Adult curriculum.

Adaptive Skating - Ages 5 & up. This adaptive recreation class is designed to give individuals with disabilities the opportunity to increase their personal potential through the development of ice skating skills. Students will receive instruction based upon their individual needs and goals. Some adaptive equipment is available for use at no extra cost. Scholarship opportunities are available.
