Learn To Play Hockey is designed to teach basic skills to skaters who want to learn how to play hockey. The focus and goal of the Hockey Learn to Play curriculum is to teach beginner hockey players the fundamentals of skating. It is important for these developing players to become comfortable on the ice, learn the basic hockey stance, stride, knee bend, use of edges, and how to hold a stick before moving into league play. Full equipment is required.  Idaho IceWorld will provide rental equipment at no additional charge, while supplies last.  Prerequisite to youth hockey leagues.

Hockey Learn to Play 1 for ages 4-8 (H1)

Players will learn how to sit on ice and stand up, proper stance, march forward, forward two-foot glide, dip or squat, scooter pushes or T-push, forward swizzles, snowplow stop and backwards skating.  H1 is a 25-minute class.   Full equipment required.  Idaho IceWorld will provide rental equipment at no additional charge, while supplies last.  Helmet must be provided by skater.  No sticks allowed.

Players will learn backward stance, skating forward using full strides, forward one-foot glides, backward hustle, backward swizzles, glide turns and moving snowplow stops.  H2 is a 25-minute class. Hockey Learn to Play 3 for ages 4-8 (H3)

Players will learn one-foot snowplow stop, introduce hips with ¼ turn twist to hockey stop, full strides using 45 degree V-Push, shuffle stride, backwards hustle, backward C-Cuts or power pushes, backward outside edge glide, forward C-Cuts, C-push glide, forward outside & inside edges, gliding 2 foot turn and lateral Crossover March. Classes will be structured following USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM) Program.  H3 is a 50-minute class. Full equipment required.  Idaho IceWorld will provide rental equipment at no additional charge, while supplies last.  Helmet and stick must be provided by skater.

Mighty Mite Hockey for ages 4-8 (H4)

Pre-requisite requirement: mastery of Hockey Learn to Play 3 (H3) skills.  Class includes on-ice coaching instruction and scrimmages. H4 is a 50-minute class.  Full hockey equipment is required.  Player must provide his/her own helmet and stick.

The goal of the scrimmage is to introduce new players from the HLTP program into a game structure. The scrimmage will be coached by USA hockey Certified coaches and will be an instructed scrimmage. Coaches will help players begin to learn the game of hockey and teamwork in a fun controlled environment.

Adult Learn to Play - Beginner Adult Development (Cost $113)

The Beginner Adult Development Clinic (B.A.D.) for adults ages 18 and up features:

  • 7 - 50 minute ice times on Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m. beginning January 9
  • No skating experience required (full equipment required)
  • Skill instruction on skating, stickhandling, passing and shooting
  • Offensive and defensive concepts and positional play
