Freestyle sessions are designed to provide a safe, structured, and professional training environment for figure skaters practicing figure skating elements and programs. All skaters and coaches are expected to demonstrate awareness, courtesy, and respect at all times.
Failure to follow these policies may result in warnings, removal from the session, or suspension of Freestyle privileges.

Idaho IceWorld Freestyle Session Rules
I. Eligibility
- Freestyle sessions are reserved for skaters actively practicing figure skating elements and programs.
- Figure skates are required. Hockey skates are not permitted.
- Skaters must have passed Pre-Free Skate through Learn to Skate USA or receive approval from a licensed figure skating coach at Idaho IceWorld.
- Skaters who have not yet reached this level must be accompanied by a coach while on the ice and must exit the ice promptly at the conclusion of their lesson.
First-time Freestyle skaters are strongly encouraged to be accompanied by a licensed coach from Idaho IceWorld to learn proper traffic patterns and freestyle session etiquette.
II. Registration & Payment
- Skaters must pre-purchase a Freestyle ticket prior to entering the ice.
- Freestyle tickets may be purchased up to 7 days in advance online or through the City of Boise Parks and Recreation App.
- Walk-up purchases may be permitted at the skate counter if space is available; however, advanced purchase is strongly recommended as sessions may sell out.
- Upon arrival, skaters must scan their ticket and sign in at the skate counter stepping onto the ice.
- Each session requires a separate purchase and sign-in. Skaters may not skate between consecutive sessions without payment for each session.
- The maximum number of skaters permitted per session is 26 (coaches not included).
III. Ice Conduct & Traffic Flow
Safety and awareness are mandatory at all times.
- Standard skating direction is counterclockwise unless otherwise directed.
- Skaters must remain aware of:
- Lutz corners
- Jump entry patterns
- Spin areas (center ice and designated zones)
- Do not stand, socialize, or loiter in jump corners, spin lanes, doorways, or along the boards. Skaters must keep moving unless receiving instruction from a coach.
- If a skater falls, they must get up immediately if able and clear the area.
- Sitting or lying on the ice is prohibited unless injured.
- Freestyle ice is for practice, not socializing. Skaters should exit the ice for breaks or conversations.
IV. Right of Way & Ice Priority
- A skater running their full program with music has first priority.
- Skaters in a private lesson have second priority.
- When yielding to a skater with priority:
- Clear the path immediately.
- Avoid crossing jump entry patterns.
- Do not enter a corner being used for a jump.
- Priority does not excuse reckless skating. All skaters remain responsible for maintaining awareness and avoiding collisions.
V. Music Policy
- Parents and spectators may not operate the music system.
- Music will be played on a first-come, first-served basis.
- After a skater’s music has been played, it must return to the end of the line.
- Coaches may request music for a student during an active lesson (“bump the line”). Coach requests will alternate with music already in queue.
- A coach may not bump the line twice consecutively for the same student if other skaters are waiting.
- Skaters may not stop and restart their music mid-program.
- Headphones, earbuds, or similar devices are not permitted while skating.
VI. Coaching & Lessons
- Only Idaho IceWorld licensed coaches may teach lessons during Freestyle sessions.
- Coaches may instruct no more than two students at a time. Freestyle sessions are not intended for group lessons.
- Groups of three (3) or more skaters practicing together are not permitted.
- Virtual lessons require prior approval and must follow the Virtual Coaching Policy.
VII. Parents and Spectators
- Parents and spectators are welcome to observe from designated viewing areas such as the lobby lobby viewing area, or from rink seating.
- Parents are welcome to encourage and support their skater, however coaching by parents is strictly prohibited unless the parent is a certified coach through U.S. Figure Skating and licensed with Idaho IceWorld. Figure skating is a highly regulated sport, and only properly credentialed professionals may provide instruction or technical feedback.
- Disruptive behavior, including tapping on the glass or distracting skaters, will not be tolerated.
- All guests are expected to follow the facility policies of Idaho IceWorld and always demonstrate respectful conduct.
Freestyle sessions are a focused training environment. Your cooperation helps maintain a safe, professional, and productive atmosphere for every skater on the ice.
VIII. Facility & Safety Rules
- Parents and spectators are not permitted in the player penalty, or scorekeeper’s box areas.
- Beverages must remain in player bench areas. Food is not permitted on the ice.
- Self-ie sticks, props, harnesses, or other accessories require prior approval from the General Manager.
- Filming or photographing other skaters without consent is prohibited.
- Unsafe, aggressive, or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
IX. Enforcement
Idaho IceWorld staff and licensed coaches have the authority to enforce all Freestyle rules.
Violations may result in:
- Verbal warning
- Removal from the session (without refund)
- Suspension of Freestyle privileges
All rules, policies, and procedures are subject to change.
